Japanese Turn UK Into Cute Anime Girl

original (3)

Apparently a discussion thread on a Japanese website lead to them designing an anthropomorphic version of the UK as a cute anime/manga girl. There are a bunch of other designs inspired by this on this page, I’ve collated some of my favourites including the thought process behind transforming the UK in the gallery below.

Artists should make their signatures easier to read… It took me 4 attempts at figuring out what the artist who drew this picture I found on Reddit’s surname. Her name is Sylvia T. Leung (Not Leary, Leany or  Learg they don’t exist or don’t draw images about ChronoTrigger).

But I like to do my due diligence, so I found her profile on Deviant Art, she’ s done another rough image of the same characters:

Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening Painting

image

This has been hanging on my wall for over a year now, it’s a painting by Green Castle Graphics of the final scene in Link’s Awakening. I’ve seen a couple of posts on Reddit that reminded me of it in particular a pearler bead rendition of a scene from Crono Trigger, which has to be my favourite game ever, so I figured I’d finally share this.

I saw this while walking past Green Castle Graphic’s stall at Sloan’s Market in Glasgow, and I had to buy it then and there. Here is the image in Green Castle’s Facebook Gallery before I bought it.

I’m sorely tempted to commission another image by Green Castle I just don’t know what… I have a couple of Ideas though.

FWIW here is the Pearler Bead Chronotrigger image that inspired me to post this:

After two years and 47,096 beads, my girlfriend and I finish this tribute to my favorite game of all time. (OC)

Twitter Wine! Kinda…

05.jpg

I was skimming through the website of Yiying Lu The person who designed the Fail Whale and noticed that she’d done the design for the label of ASDA’s own brand California wine…

I can only find the “California Fruity White Wine” on ASDA’s website but that doesn’t mean they don’t have the others in store.

Hows that for a nice bit of social networking trivia?

Update: I’ve also found the Rose, Zinfandel and Juicy Red on ASDA’s website.

Fail whale Cake

The “Fail Whale” is a fairly iconic image that anyone who’s used twitter has probably seen at some point, unless you never use the web interface or have been really lucky. This cake was created by Mariana Pugliese a cake designer from Buenos Aires.

Interestingly the Fail Whale was designed by a Chinese illustrator Yiying Lu and was originally an elephant:

What if Apple Designed the GameBoy?

Artist Patrick Staudt re-imagines the Nintendo GameBoy as it would have been designed by Apple. The thing is the original GameBoy was  released in 1989 at about the same time Apple released the Newton. I think for a game playing device the GameBoy is definitely more iconic and probably better designed than the Newton…

File:Nintendo Gameboy.jpgApple Newton-IMG 0454-cropped.jpgFile:Apple Newton.jpg

Also if apple designed the GameBoy right now we would probably just end up with the iPhone,iPod Touch or iPad because lets face it those products do what the GameBoy did and are both stealing market share from Nintendo and Sony.

But if hypothetically Apple’s design engineers went back in time and took with them the technological advances that allow them to make the iPhone so slime but not the retina display and their hatred for physical buttons and decided in their infinite wisdom to stick a green and black dot matrix screen on their design for the GameBoy then it might just look like this (More comments inline, Comments may be sarcastic…):

Wireless? Wirelessly connecting to what? The internet didn’t even exist at that point. And modems maxed out at 28.8K in 1989 (Or there abouts). You might have had IR connectivity but that would have been slow as hell too.

I’m not going to bother looking up the GameBoys max FPS I doubt it was that high…

I’m willing to bet he thought he was being clever by going that small… In that size of packaging you’d have been lucky to squeeze 8Mb into that device if you wanted room for other electronics. It wasn’t till 1991 that you could even get a 100Mb 2.5″ drive a 2.5″ drive is about the size of an iPhone…

Okay so they are designing it now… Otherwise how WiFi? The WiFi alliance wasn’t formed until 1999. Still 200 hours of gaming on a battery that fits in that case? Even with a DotMatrix screen the original GameBoy managed 10-12 hours on 4 Batteries. What fantasy world do they live in! I want to be there! But I can’t! Why am I shouting!

My thumbs have power… Also zero mechanical failure? That’s impressive, except my Old GameBoy that I got in 1989 still works, so not that impressive…

Oooh volume!

What the hell do those buttons do? I assume the are contrast buttons but that’s only because I had a GameBoy and it had contrast buttons on it.

Paper Roses Made From Book Pages How To

diy paper flowers

I’m of two minds on these roses, on the one hand they look awesome, on the other I’m not sure I agree with destroying books to make them… I’m not sure what it is about books that makes them sacred, but there is something about them that makes defiling them a cardinal sin. That said destroying a mass produced art work to create a unique one is okay isn’t it?

If you are Lazy you can just buy them on Etsy but I’ve copied the instructions here just in case the source link goes down for whatever reason.

Craft Supplies:
Paper
Grosgrain Ribbon, ½ Width cut to 4 inch lengths
16 Gauge Wire cut to 15 inch lengths
Glue Gun
Glue Sticks (low temp)
Scissors
Wire Cutters

Step 1: Gather materials. If you are using vintage books or sheet music as your paper source make sure it is still flexible enough to curl with your fingers. The wire can be found at the hardware store, and is sometimes called “black wire” or “annealed coil wire.” Be sure you are using low temp hot glue because you’ll be able to feel it right through the paper petals as you work.

Step 2: Cutting. You will need to stockpile at least 5 different sizes of petals ranging from about ¾ inch wide to 3 inches wide. I cut freehand, and avoid templates, so that each petal is a unique and organic shape. Think of the shapes as little church windows or arches. Some can be pointy, and some can be rounded. For each flower you will need at least 4 of each size. Make more than you need.

Step 3: Shaping. I really feel that this is the most important step to create natural and soft looking flowers. Roll the edges of each petal, and pinch the base slightly. Each one can be done a little differently to give the petals character and roundness. I shape all of my petals before I even begin gluing anything.

Step 4: Rolling the center. You need to cut out one more shape for each flower, and this is for the coiled center of the rose. This shape should be about 2 ½ inches long with a rounded tip. Roll it up into a tube to create its shape. Unroll it and run a bead of hot glue along the inside and re-roll it around the end of your wire. Another dot of glue will hold it in place.

Step 5: Attaching petals. Begin with your smallest petals. Use a single dot of glue, about ¼ inch from the bottom of the petal to attach it to the stem. Your next petal should overlap the first. Continue adding small petals, rotating the stem as you go, always slightly overlapping the last petal you attached. This is where your artistry will come in as you continue to rotate and build. As you begin adding larger petals pinch the bases, as they are much wider. By pinching at the bases you will be rounding out the rose, and creating space between layers.

Step 6: Finishing. The sepals will be made of ribbon, which will also cover your final seams and create a nice polished look. Each rose needs two – 4 inch lengths of ribbon. Wrap them around the stem and secure to the undersides of the petals. Cut a ‘V’ into each end of the ribbons to finish.
