Story Idea: Zombie Water World

This idea stems from a tweet by @endless_psych. The basic premise is that zombies have taken over the major land masses of the earth, and people have had to migrate  en masse to the sea.

People living on cruise liners which have been retrofitted with desalinization equipment, big floating cities reminiscent of  Water World, the difference being there is land and we know where it is but we cant go there, because it’s infested with Zombies.

Not only do you have to worry about resource gathering, and general survival on the seven seas but you also have to deal with the odd floater (floating Zombies?) that passes by.

People will want to get on land to harvest raw materials and food stuff, but they run the danger of being eaten alive by the undead. I also envision there being floating zombie ships where all the occupants have been turned or eaten because the ship ran aground or they took on someone who’d been bitten.

It’s an Idea for thought, I’d be surprised if there isn’t already a B-Movie that has this very premise.

Story Idea: Take your happy pills.

I had an idea for a story while in the shower this morning, set in a noot too distant future where people aren’t capable of having emotions anymore.

In order to experience an emotion you would have to take a pill/drink that imbued you with that emotion. Some emotions would be fairly common happiness for example would be available in bars, and would be provided to guests at weddings. It would be a bit of a social faux pas to turn up to a funeral not having taken some sad and maybe a little bit of remorse.

Some emotions would be rained and only available over the counter like love. Others would only be available from black market dealers like rage and anger.

I think some emotions would be addictive to some people, use of self righteousness for example would be rife in the religious establishment.

Other emotions would only be available to the police, I envision the use of fear gas grenades on rioters who’d taken too much anger. Maybe detectives would stock up on inquisitive while trying to solve a case.

I think that rather than experiencing an emotion you might get a craving for it, and that would lead to you seeking it out.

The plot as it is centers around a police officer/detective who is investigating black market emotions and stumbles onto a rage dealing ring

I don’t have much more in the way of plot, at the moment its just a concept. I’m going to think on it and see where it goes.

Dream Fragment/Story Idea: The democracy tree

I had this dream about the time of the general election it was of a society of woodland people, possibly elves possibly not. The people were in the process of democratically electing a leader, there were two candidates each of whom had their say on a podium facing the people in front of an enormous tree.

Once the candidates had had a chance to have their say, and they had fielded questions from the crowd, the who crowd broke into dance while chanting.

The leaves of the tree fell one by one, until the tree was barren. Then the leaves were collected and sorted by colour, the candidate who had the most leaves was the leader of the people until next autumn when the ritual would be repeated.

Story Idea: In Google we trust

I had an idea today about an alternate future where fanboyism has gone further and has superseded religion. Basically people have given up on putting their faith in insubstantial supernatural being and instead invest their faith in brands.

Anyone who has met an Apple fan boy/girl knows that the level of zeal and devotion they have towards their fruit computers. The same is true of the drinkers of Irn Bru and some Jack Daniels drinkers.

I envision this being a polytheistic society where people believe in different brands for different spheres of influence, but rival sects wouldn’t want to freely intermingle for example two people might be in the global cult of Pepsi both hating their arch nemesis Coca-Cola, but they may have religious differences when it came to which beer they supported.

Some brands have global appeal and some might be considered to be no more than Cults, For example Irn Bru is a cult which has a bit of a powers in Scotland but is fairly obscure elsewhere.

I think this is a little inspired by Max Barry’s Jennifer Government but not overly so.

Story Idea: The Reader

I’m sure this has been done before but I think that this would make a good kids book. A character who can travel into any book they read be it factual or fiction. They read a travel guide, they go to that country, they read a novel they are transported into that world.

I guess it’s kind of like Ink heart in reverse. I think the tension could arise from how they get back home. The scope for adventure is infinite, I think it could make for a good series of books for kids. To start off with the character could travel into books that have passed into the public domain, like Alice in Wonder Land, or Peter Pan, or even classics like Shakespeare, Austen etc. If the series took off, maybe tie in’s could be made with the rights holders for other works of fiction.

I see this as a gateway drug to reading for children, letting them experience the world of more complicated books in a children’s story, could lead to them considering reading them later on.

I got this Idea from a friends Facebook status, they said they were in Algeria, when they were actually just reading about it.

Story Idea: The X Virus/The myth of man.

Inspired by this comic strip I started to think what would happen to society if a virus were to spread through humanity which broke our Y chromosomes? Within 3 generations there would be no men. We would probably figure out some way of reproduction in fact we have the technology now.
Two or three hundred/thousand years down line the existence of “Man” would be a myth. Everyone on the planet would be a lesbian because thats the natural way of things. It reminds me a bit of the plot of Vandread except without the whole space war thing.
What would happen if suddenly a man reappeared? Either a baby boy was born (In a reverse Children of Men type plot) or an unknown indiginous tribe being discovered in some remote area?
How would this upset the staus quo? Would people see this as the way of old, a novelty? would hetero sexualism be seen in the same light as homosexualism is/was? Could it be seen as an abomonation?
Would specimens of men be kept in zoo’s and marveled at?
“Look at the odd arrangement of facial/body hair, they look like monkeys.”
Assuming that the virus hadn’t affected other animals, would humanity over time have rationalized their sexlessness as a sign that they were higher beings than animals?
“Animals have sex as humans we don’t need that. It’s bestial”
In a stereo typical science fiction univese a woman would start to have feelings for a man and nature would kick in, however is that what would happen?
My guess is that the majority of woman kind would be so disgusted with the thought that chances are that man would die unfulfilled? it does beg the question, are we programmed to know what sex is? I know other animals are, because they don’t communicate. Birds and bees don’t have to have a conversation about the birds and the bees, they just get on with it.
Is sex a genetic memory? If so can we “forget” that genetic memory?

This comic also from the same site might be considdered relevant…

Story Idea: The End of Immortality

I had a dream two nights ago which could be turned into a science fiction short story, maybe even a novel. I the Dream I was one of a race of Immortals (I think in the dream we were Humans who had just solved death, like in Cory Doctorow’s Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, which I’ve only listened to the first couple of chapters of as a podcast), In this society no one worked, all menial labour was done by clones who were treated a subserviant race.

Also in this society criminals rather than being incarcerated were just paralysed from the neck down, for the duration of thier sentences, they were walked about in wheel chairs by clone servents.

At some point in the dream it became apparent that we were no longer immortal, this meant that people who had no need to worry about death suddenly had this enormous shadow looming over them.

I think there a multiple facets to look into in this story, I think the Immortality bit is a bit Down and Out and a bit BSG. It would also be interesting to look into how the same circumstances would effect something non human, like the Endless from the Sandman, or more traditional dieties (I guess this is probably what the plot of American Gods is about, I’m only hafway throug it though), it’s also a bit Highlander I guess.

The treatment of criminals is something I’ve never encountered before, most science fiction seems to assume either incarceration, freezing, some form of game where they fight for thier life/freedom/fame, or just the death sentence for everything, not very many take the view of a more lenient society… Arguably paralysis is not nessisarilly more lenient, at least in prison you can move your own body even if it’s within the confines of your cell. When your body becomes your prison I think thats possible a worse punishment.

The third aspect of the dream, the subserviant clones echos my blog post from a few months ago, maybe the clones will notice that they are treated like shit, and rebel. Maybe it’s a criminal who is being served by the clones who makes them realise this fact? It wouldn’t be the first time a criminal sanctions criminal acts while imprisoned, then again is freeing a race who are subjugated and treated as slaves really a criminal act?

All food for thought.
